During this presentation, the faculty will explore the evidence underpinning the relationship between physical activity and heart disease. You will learn about the duration and intensity of exercise necessary to appreciate a salutary effect on cardiovascular health, including how exercise affects modifiable risk factors for coronary artery disease.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recall epidemiological research establishing physical inactivity as an independent risk factor for coronary artery disease
  • Recognize the roles that age, sex, and exercise intensity play with respect to exercise and risk modification
  • Define the mechanisms by which exercise influences the modification of risk factors for coronary artery disease
  • Describe the relative and absolute risks of sudden death associated with physical activity
